Youth Digest is a new, digital media publication, committed to telling the stories of under-represented artists within the creative industry. With our online and bi-annual magazine, we are addressing inequality and misrepresentation in the industry through platforming the creative and editorial work of our community across fashion, art, photography, illustration and more.
We often ask ourselves what life would be like after graduating from art school. When applying for jobs, art students are often dogged by unwanted opinions on how creative degrees will do nothing to prepare us for the ‘real world’, nor conveniently set us up with a 9-to-5 job. Now excuse me, Karen, why on earth would I want to give up on my life and spend most of it buried in a desk answering phone calls and upgrading my eye-glass prescription after spending 7.5h in front of a bright screen?
As a young artist that I am, I can tell guarantee you art school is cool. You learn skills you thought you wouldn’t, meet like-minded people, and even disagree with people since us artists were born stubborn, and it takes us a while to accept criticism. But the one emotion you start feeling towards the end of your course is anxiety. You start questioning your work, your purpose and even re-consider taking that admin 9-to-5 job you promised your young self you’d never go for. You give up on your creativity and start comparing yourself to the people around you. But hey! This is why we exist in the first place. To show the industry what’s missing out on. To let them know of your existence, and what you are capable of doing. Your process from the artist you once where to the person you have become today, regardless of all the shitty moments. Because guess what? The procrastination, the tears, the cheap coffee… they were all worth it in the end. It’s what made your art.
Remember, embrace your inner artist, and don’t let that creativity of yours ever fade. 🐝 kind x
