CREATIVITY IS SUBSTRACTION

why the heck do we worry?

Rachel Boyd

We are a part of a generation that is so oriented by appearance. And, at times, everything seems a bit ‘plastic.’ For us young people, there is a constant pressure to be successful; you are expected to become a little genius after graduating; because we were born to be digital, we are to know all computer software, a multi-disciplinary machine, if I may say so. We are meant to be super sociable at all times because ‘hey, you’re young! Get yourself out there to the world!’ To be beautiful because being your own version of yourself ain’t enough. I found it incredibly hard to grow up and become who I am. And do everything I’m expected to do all at the same time. For a person in her 20s I stress too much, overthink too much and do too much. But hey! I am here to remind you that it’s okay to lose, to cry and to even have cellulite. This aspiration to be perfect is toxic! Our generation can do so much more than what we are expected from this damaging society. Discover new local galleries and workshops, drink our overpriced Starby iced latte and enjoy reading an old novel under an American Basswood tree. We need to wake up! Stop worrying about that job you applied for 3 weeks ago, don’t compare your works of art with others and mostly, move on and be happy!
